Deuteronomy 26:17-19

Context
26:17 Today you have declared the Lord to be your God, and that you will walk in his ways, keep his statutes, commandments, and ordinances, and obey him. 26:18 And today the Lord has declared you to be his special people (as he already promised you) so you may keep all his commandments. 26:19 Then 1  he will elevate you above all the nations he has made and you will receive praise, fame, and honor. 2  You will 3  be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he has said.

Psalms 116:16

I am your lowest slave. 4

You saved me from death. 5

Jeremiah 50:5

Context

50:5 They will ask the way to Zion;

they will turn their faces toward it.

They will come 6  and bind themselves to the Lord

Micah 4:2

Context

4:2 Many nations will come, saying,

“Come on! Let’s go up to the Lord’s mountain,

to the temple 8  of Jacob’s God,

so he can teach us his commands 9

and we can live by his laws.” 10

For Zion will be the source of instruction;

the Lord’s teachings will proceed from Jerusalem. 11

Zechariah 8:20-23

Context
8:20 The Lord who rules over all says, ‘It will someday come to pass that people – residents of many cities – will come. 8:21 The inhabitants of one will go to another and say, “Let’s go up at once to ask the favor of the Lord, to seek the Lord who rules over all. Indeed, I’ll go with you.”’ 8:22 Many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the Lord who rules over all and to ask his favor. 8:23 The Lord who rules over all says, ‘In those days ten people from all languages and nations will grasp hold of – indeed, grab – the robe of one Jew and say, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.”’” 12

Zechariah 13:9

Context

13:9 Then I will bring the remaining third into the fire;

I will refine them like silver is refined

and will test them like gold is tested.

They will call on my name and I will answer;

I will say, ‘These are my people,’

and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’” 13

[26:19]  1 tn Heb “so that.” Verses 18-19 are one sentence in the Hebrew text, but the translation divides it into three sentences for stylistic reasons. The first clause in verse 19 gives a result of the preceding clause. When Israel keeps God’s law, God will bless them with fame and honor (cf. NAB “he will then raise you high in praise and renown and glory”; NLT “And if you do, he will make you greater than any other nation”).

[26:19]  2 tn Heb “for praise and for a name and for glory.”

[26:19]  3 tn Heb “and to be.” A new sentence was started here for stylistic reasons.

[116:16]  4 tn Heb “I am your servant, the son of your female servant.” The phrase “son of a female servant” (see also Ps 86:16) is used of a son born to a secondary wife or concubine (Exod 23:12). In some cases the child’s father is the master of the house (see Gen 21:10, 13; Judg 9:18). The use of the expression here certainly does not imply that the Lord has such a secondary wife or concubine! It is used metaphorically and idiomatically to emphasize the psalmist’s humility before the Lord and his status as the Lord’s servant.

[116:16]  5 tn Heb “you have loosed my bonds.” In this context the imagery refers to deliverance from death (see v. 3).

[50:5]  6 tc The translation here assumes that the Hebrew בֹּאוּ (bou; a Qal imperative masculine plural) should be read בָּאוּ (bau; a Qal perfect third plural). This reading is presupposed by the Greek version of Aquila, the Latin version, and the Targum (see BHS note a, which mistakenly assumes that the form must be imperfect).

[50:5]  7 sn See Jer 32:40 and the study note there for the nature of this lasting agreement.

[4:2]  8 tn Heb “house.”

[4:2]  9 tn Heb “ways.”

[4:2]  10 tn Heb “and we can walk in his paths.”

[4:2]  11 tn Heb “instruction [or, “law”] will go out from Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”

[8:23]  12 sn This scene of universal and overwhelming attraction of the nations to Israel’s God finds initial fulfillment in the establishment of the church (Acts 2:5-11) but ultimate completion in the messianic age (Isa 45:14, 24; 60:14; Zech 14:16-21).

[13:9]  13 sn The expression I will say ‘It is my people,’ and they will say ‘the Lord is my God’ is reminiscent of the restoration of Israel predicted by Hosea, who said that those who had been rejected as God’s people would be reclaimed and once more become his sons and daughters (Hos 2:23).
