Exodus 15:17

Context

15:17 You will bring them in 1  and plant them in the mountain 2  of your inheritance,

in the place you made 3  for your residence, O Lord,

the sanctuary, O Lord, that your hands have established.

Leviticus 18:25-28

Context
18:25 Therefore 4  the land has become unclean and I have brought the punishment for its iniquity upon it, 5  so that the land has vomited out its inhabitants. 18:26 You yourselves must obey 6  my statutes and my regulations and must not do any of these abominations, both the native citizen and the resident foreigner in your midst, 7  18:27 for the people who were in the land before you have done all these abominations, 8  and the land has become unclean. 18:28 So do not make the land vomit you out because you defile it 9  just as it has vomited out the nations 10  that were before you.

Amos 7:17

Context

7:17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says:

‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the streets 11

and your sons and daughters will die violently. 12

Your land will be given to others 13

and you will die in a foreign 14  land.

Israel will certainly be carried into exile 15  away from its land.’”

Acts 10:14-15

Context
10:14 But Peter said, “Certainly not, Lord, for I have never eaten anything defiled and ritually unclean!” 16  10:15 The voice 17  spoke to him again, a second time, “What God has made clean, you must not consider 18  ritually unclean!” 19

Acts 11:8-9

Context
11:8 But I said, ‘Certainly not, Lord, for nothing defiled or ritually unclean 20  has ever entered my mouth!’ 11:9 But the voice replied a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, you must not consider 21  ritually unclean!’

[15:17]  1 tn The verb is imperfect.

[15:17]  2 sn The “mountain” and the “place” would be wherever Yahweh met with his people. It here refers to Canaan, the land promised to the patriarchs.

[15:17]  3 tn The verb is perfect tense, referring to Yahweh’s previous choice of the holy place.

[18:25]  4 tn Heb “And.” The Hebrew conjunction ו (vav, “and”) can be considered to have resultative or even inferential force here.

[18:25]  5 tn Heb “and I have visited its [punishment for] iniquity on it.” See the note on Lev 17:16 above.

[18:26]  6 tn Heb “And you shall keep, you.” The latter emphatic personal pronoun “you” is left out of a few medieval Hebrew mss, Smr, the LXX, Syriac, and Vulgate.

[18:26]  7 tn Heb “the native and the sojourner”; NIV “The native-born and the aliens”; NAB “whether natives or resident aliens.”

[18:27]  8 tn Heb “for all these abominations the men of the land who were before you have done.”

[18:28]  9 tn Heb “And the land will not vomit you out in your defiling it.”

[18:28]  10 tc The MT reads the singular “nation” and is followed by ASV, NASB, NRSV; the LXX, Syriac, and Targum have the plural “nations” (cf. v. 24).

[7:17]  11 tn Heb “in the city,” that is, “in public.”

[7:17]  12 tn Heb “will fall by the sword.”

[7:17]  13 tn Heb “will be divided up with a [surveyor’s] measuring line.”

[7:17]  14 tn Heb “[an] unclean”; or “[an] impure.” This fate would be especially humiliating for a priest, who was to distinguish between the ritually clean and unclean (see Lev 10:10).

[7:17]  15 tn See the note on the word “exile” in 5:5.

[10:14]  16 tn Possibly there is a subtle distinction in meaning between κοινός (koinos) and ἀκάθαρτος (akaqarto") here, but according to L&N 53.39 it is difficult to determine precise differences in meaning based on existing contexts.

[10:15]  17 tn Grk “And the voice.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

[10:15]  18 tn Or “declare.”

[10:15]  19 sn For the significance of this vision see Mark 7:14-23; Rom 14:14; Eph 2:11-22. God directed this change in practice.

[11:8]  20 tn Possibly there is a subtle distinction in meaning between κοινός (koinos) and ἀκάθαρτος (akaqartos) here, but according to L&N 53.39 it is difficult to determine precise differences in meaning based on existing contexts. The sentiment Peter expressed is like Ezek 4:14.

[11:9]  21 tn Or “declare.” The wording matches Acts 10:15.
