Ezekiel 2:6

Context
2:6 But you, son of man, do not fear them, and do not fear their words – even though briers 1  and thorns 2  surround you and you live among scorpions – do not fear their words and do not be terrified of the looks they give you, 3  for they are a rebellious house!

Ezekiel 6:3

Context
6:3 Say, ‘Mountains of Israel, 4  Hear the word of the sovereign Lord! 5  This is what the sovereign Lord says to the mountains and the hills, to the ravines and the valleys: I am bringing 6  a sword against you, and I will destroy your high places. 7

Ezekiel 6:9

Context
6:9 Then your survivors will remember me among the nations where they are exiled. They will realize 8  how I was crushed by their unfaithful 9  heart which turned from me and by their eyes which lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves 10  because of the evil they have done and because of all their abominable practices.

Ezekiel 7:19

Context
7:19 They will discard their silver in the streets, and their gold will be treated like filth. 11  Their silver and gold will not be able to deliver them on the day of the Lord’s fury. 12  They will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs because their wealth 13  was the obstacle leading to their iniquity. 14

Ezekiel 16:37

Context
16:37 therefore, take note: I am about to gather all your lovers whom you enjoyed, both all those you loved and all those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around, and I will expose your nakedness to them, and they will see all your nakedness. 15

Ezekiel 18:20

Context
18:20 The person who sins is the one who will die. A son will not suffer 16  for his father’s iniquity, and a father will not suffer 17  for his son’s iniquity; the righteous person will be judged according to his righteousness, and the wicked person according to his wickedness. 18

Ezekiel 31:16

Context
31:16 I made the nations shake at the sound of its fall, when I threw it down to Sheol, along with those who descend to the pit. 19  Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest and the best of Lebanon, all that were well-watered, were comforted in the earth below.

Ezekiel 36:5

Context
36:5 therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says: Surely I have spoken in the fire of my zeal against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, who with great joy and utter contempt have made my land their property and prey, because of its pasture.’

Ezekiel 37:19

Context
37:19 tell them, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Look, I am about to take the branch of Joseph which is in the hand of Ephraim and the tribes of Israel associated with him, and I will place them on the stick of Judah, 20  and make them into one stick – they will be one in my hand.’ 21

Ezekiel 40:4

Context
40:4 The man said to me, “Son of man, watch closely, listen carefully, and pay attention 22  to everything I show you, for you have been brought here so that I can show it to you. 23  Tell the house of Israel everything you see.”

Ezekiel 41:7

Context
41:7 The side chambers surrounding the temple were wider at each successive story; 24  for the structure 25  surrounding the temple went up story by story all around the temple. For this reason the width of the temple increased as it went up, and one went up from the lowest story to the highest by the way of the middle story.

[2:6]  1 tn The Hebrew term occurs only here in the OT.

[2:6]  2 tn The Hebrew term is found elsewhere in the OT only in Ezek 28:24.

[2:6]  3 tn Heb “of their faces.”

[6:3]  4 tn The phrase “mountains of Israel” occurs only in the book of Ezekiel (6:2, 3; 19:9; 33:28; 34:13, 14; 35:12; 36:1, 4, 8; 37:22; 38:8; 39:2, 4, 17). The expression refers to the whole land of Israel.

[6:3]  5 tn The introductory formula “Hear the word of the sovereign Lord” parallels a pronouncement delivered by the herald of a king (2 Kgs 18:28).

[6:3]  6 tn Heb “Look I, I am bringing.” The repetition of the pronoun draws attention to the speaker. The construction also indicates that the action is soon to come; the Lord is “about to bring a sword against” them.

[6:3]  7 tn The Hebrew term refers to elevated platforms where pagan sacrifices were performed.

[6:9]  7 tn The words “they will realize” are not in the Hebrew text; they are added here for stylistic reasons since this clause assumes the previous verb “to remember” or “to take into account.”

[6:9]  8 tn Heb “how I was broken by their adulterous heart.” The image of God being “broken” is startling, but perfectly natural within the metaphorical framework of God as offended husband. The idiom must refer to the intense grief that Israel’s unfaithfulness caused God. For a discussion of the syntax and semantics of the Hebrew text, see M. Greenberg, Ezekiel (AB), 1:134.

[6:9]  9 tn Heb adds “in their faces.”

[7:19]  10 tn The Hebrew term can refer to menstrual impurity. The term also occurs at the end of v. 20.

[7:19]  11 sn Compare Zeph 1:18.

[7:19]  12 tn Heb “it.” Apparently the subject is the silver and gold mentioned earlier (see L. C. Allen, Ezekiel [WBC], 1:102).

[7:19]  13 tn The “stumbling block of their iniquity” is a unique phrase of the prophet Ezekiel (Ezek 14:3, 4, 7; 18:30; 44:12).

[16:37]  13 sn Harlots suffered degradation when their nakedness was exposed (Jer 13:22, 26; Hos 2:12; Nah 3:5).

[18:20]  16 tn Heb “lift up, bear.”

[18:20]  17 tn Heb “lift up, bear.”

[18:20]  18 tn Heb “the righteousness of the righteous one will be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked one will be upon him.”

[31:16]  19 sn For the expression “going down to the pit,” see Ezek 26:20; 32:18, 24, 29.

[37:19]  22 tn Heb “I will place them on it, that is, on the stick of Judah.”

[37:19]  23 sn The reunification of Israel and Judah is envisioned as well in Ezek 33:23, 29; Jer 3:18; 23:5-6; Hos 1:11; Amos 9:11.

[40:4]  25 tn Heb “look with your eyes, hear with your ears, and set your mind on.”

[40:4]  26 tn Heb “in order to show (it) to you.”

[41:7]  28 tc The Hebrew is difficult here. The Targum envisions a winding ramp or set of stairs, which entails reading the first word as a noun rather than a verb and reading the second word also not as a verb, supposing that an initial mem has been read as vav and nun. See D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 2:549.

[41:7]  29 tn The Hebrew term occurs only here in the OT.

[43:13]  31 tn Heb “the measurements of the altar by cubits, the cubit being a cubit and a handbreadth.” The measuring units here and in the remainder of this section are the Hebrew “long” cubit, consisting of a cubit (about 18 inches or 45 cm) and a handbreadth (about 3 inches or 7.5 cm), for a total of 21 inches (52.5 cm). Because modern readers are not familiar with the cubit as a unit of measurement, and due to the additional complication of the “long” cubit as opposed to the regular cubit, all measurements have been converted to American standard feet and inches, with the Hebrew measurements and the metric equivalents given in the notes. On the altar see Ezek 40:47.

[43:13]  32 tn The Hebrew term normally means “bosom.” Here it refers to a hollow in the ground.

[43:13]  33 tn Heb “one cubit” (i.e., 52.5 cm).

[43:13]  34 tn The word “high” is not in the Hebrew text but is supplied in the translation for clarity.

[43:13]  35 tn Heb “one cubit” (i.e., 52.5 cm).

[43:13]  36 tn Heb “one span.” A span was three handbreadths, or about nine inches (i.e., 22.5 cm).

[43:13]  37 tc Heb “bulge, protuberance, mound.” The translation follows the LXX.
