Galatians 5:7

Context

5:7 You were running well; who prevented you from obeying 1  the truth?

Hebrews 10:38-39

Context
10:38 But my righteous one will live by faith, and if he shrinks back, I 2  take no pleasure in him. 3  10:39 But we are not among those who shrink back and thus perish, but are among those who have faith and preserve their souls. 4

Hebrews 10:2

Context
10:2 For otherwise would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers would have been purified once for all and so have 5  no further consciousness of sin?

Hebrews 2:10

Context
2:10 For it was fitting for him, for whom and through whom all things exist, 6  in bringing many sons to glory, to make the pioneer 7  of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

Revelation 2:4-5

Context
2:4 But I have this against you: You have departed 8  from your first love! 2:5 Therefore, remember from what high state 9  you have fallen and repent! Do 10  the deeds you did at the first; 11  if not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place – that is, if you do not repent. 12

Revelation 3:3

Context
3:3 Therefore, remember what you received and heard, 13  and obey it, 14  and repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will never 15  know at what hour I will come against 16  you.

[5:7]  1 tn Or “following.” BDAG 792 s.v. πείθω 3.b states, “obey, follow w. dat. of the pers. or thing…Gal 3:1 v.l.; 5:7.”

[10:38]  2 tn Grk “my soul.”

[10:38]  3 sn A quotation from Hab 2:4.

[10:39]  4 tn Grk “not…of shrinking back to perdition but of faith to the preservation of the soul.”

[10:2]  5 tn Grk “the worshipers, having been purified once for all, would have.”

[2:10]  6 tn Grk “for whom are all things and through whom are all things.”

[2:10]  7 sn The Greek word translated pioneer is used of a “prince” or leader, the representative head of a family. It also carries nuances of “trailblazer,” one who breaks through to new ground for those who follow him. It is used some thirty-five times in the Greek OT and four times in the NT, always of Christ (Acts 3:15; 5:31; Heb 2:10; 12:2).

[2:4]  8 tn The Greek word translated “departed from” (ἀφίημι, afihmi; L&N 15.48) can actually be used of divorce (L&N 34.78), so the imagery here is very strong.

[2:5]  9 tn Grk “from where,” but status is in view rather than physical position. On this term BDAG 838 s.v. πόθεν 1 states, “from what place? from where?…In imagery μνημόνευε πόθεν πέπτωκες remember from what (state) you have fallen Rv 2:5.”

[2:5]  10 tn Grk “and do” (a continuation of the previous sentence in the Greek text). For stylistic reasons in English a new sentence was started here in the translation. The repeated mention of repenting at the end of the verse suggests that the intervening material (“do the deeds you did at first”) specifies how the repentance is to be demonstrated.

[2:5]  11 tn Or “you did formerly.”

[2:5]  12 tn Although the final clause is somewhat awkward, it is typical of the style of Revelation.

[3:3]  13 tn The expression πῶς εἴληφας καὶ ἤκουσας (pw" eilhfa" kai hkousa") probably refers to the initial instruction in the Christian life they had received and been taught; this included doctrine and ethical teaching.

[3:3]  14 tn Grk “keep it,” in the sense of obeying what they had initially been taught.

[3:3]  15 tn The negation here is with οὐ μή (ou mh, the strongest possible form of negation in Koine Greek).

[3:3]  16 tn Or “come on.”
