[2:11]  1 tn Heb “and the eyes of the pride of men will be brought low, and the arrogance of men will be brought down.” The repetition of the verbs שָׁפַל (shafal) and שָׁחָח (shakhakh) from v. 9 draws attention to the appropriate nature of the judgment. Those proud men who “bow low” before idols will be forced to “bow low” before God when he judges their sin.

[2:11]  2 tn Or “elevated”; CEV “honored.”

[22:6]  3 tn Heb “[with] the chariots of men, horsemen.”

[22:6]  4 sn A distant region in the direction of Mesopotamia; see Amos 1:5; 9:7.

[22:6]  5 tn Heb “Kir uncovers” (so NAB, NIV).

[22:6]  6 sn The Elamites and men of Kir may here symbolize a fierce army from a distant land. If this oracle anticipates a Babylonian conquest of the city (see 39:5-7), then the Elamites and men of Kir are perhaps viewed here as mercenaries in the Babylonian army. See J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:410.

[29:19]  5 tn Or “will rejoice” (NIV, NCV, NLT).

[29:19]  6 sn See the note on the phrase “the Holy One of Israel” in 1:4.

[29:21]  7 tn Heb “the ones who make a man a sinner with a word.” The Hiphil of חָטָא (khata’) here has a delocutive sense: “declare a man sinful/guilty.”

[29:21]  8 sn Legal disputes were resolved at the city gate, where the town elders met. See Amos 5:10.

[29:21]  9 tn Heb “and deprive by emptiness the innocent.”

[43:4]  9 tn Heb “Since you are precious in my eyes and you are honored.”

[47:3]  11 tn Heb “Your shame will be seen.” In this context “shame” is a euphemism referring to the genitals.

[47:3]  12 tn Heb “I will not meet a man.” The verb פָּגַע (pagah) apparently carries the nuance “meet with kindness” here (cf. 64:5, and see BDB 803 s.v. Qal.2).

[52:14]  13 tn Some witnesses read “him,” which is more consistent with the context, where the servant is spoken about, not addressed. However, it is possible that the Lord briefly addresses the servant here. The present translation assumes the latter view and places the phrase in parentheses.

[52:14]  14 tn Heb “such was the disfigurement.” The noun מִשְׁחַת (mishkhat) occurs only here. It may be derived from the verbal root שָׁחַת (shakhat, “be ruined”; see BDB 1007-8 s.v. שָׁחַת). The construct form appears here before a prepositional phrase (cf. GKC 421 §130.a).

[52:14]  15 tn Heb “from a man his appearance.” The preposition מִן (min) here carries the sense “away from,” i.e., “so as not to be.” See BDB 583 s.v.
