[5:11]  1 tn The word “Hear” is supplied in the translation for clarification and for stylistic reasons.

[5:11]  2 tn The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain. Some translate “those who distribute the water” (HALOT 344 s.v. חצץ pi). For other options see B. Lindars, Judges 1-5, 246-47.

[5:11]  3 tn Or perhaps “repeat.”

[5:11]  4 tn See the note on the term “warriors” in v. 7.

[5:15]  5 tn Heb “Issachar.” The words “the men of” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[5:15]  6 tn Or “was true to.”

[5:15]  7 tn Heb “at his feet.”

[5:15]  8 tn Heb “great was.”

[5:15]  9 tc The great majority of Hebrew mss have “resolves of heart,” but a few mss read “searchings of heart,” which is preferable in light of v. 16.

[9:6]  9 tc The translation assumes that the form in the Hebrew text (מֻצָּב, mutsav) is a corruption of an original מַצֵּבָה (matsevah, “pillar”). The reference is probably to a pagan object of worship (cf. LXX).

[9:19]  13 tn Heb “house.”

[9:19]  14 tn Heb “then rejoice in Abimelech, and may he also rejoice in you.”

[9:37]  17 tn Heb “navel.” On the background of the Hebrew expression “the navel of the land,” see R. G. Boling, Judges (AB), 178-79.

[9:37]  18 tn Heb “head.”

[9:37]  19 tn Some English translations simply transliterated this as a place name (Heb “Elon-meonenim”); cf. NAB, NRSV.

[11:5]  21 tn Heb “When the Ammonites fought with Israel.”

[11:5]  22 tn Or “elders.”

[11:5]  23 tn Heb “went to take Jephthah.”

[11:20]  25 tn Heb “Sihon.” The proper name (“Sihon”) has been replaced in the translation by the pronoun (“he”) because of English style; a repetition of the proper name here would be redundant in English.

[11:20]  26 tn Heb “all his people” (also in the following verse).

[11:25]  29 tn The Hebrew grammatical constructions of all three rhetorical questions indicate emphasis, which “really” and “dare to” are intended to express in the translation.

[18:22]  33 tn Heb “the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house.”

[20:2]  37 tn Heb “the cornerstones”; or “the supports.” The word is used of leaders in only three other texts – 1 Sam 14:38; Isa 19:13; Zech 10:4.

[20:2]  38 tn The words “which numbered” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[20:20]  41 tn Heb “the men of Israel.” The noun phrase has been replaced by the pronoun (“they”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.
