Jeremiah 14:7

14:7 Then I said, 1 

“O Lord, intervene for the honor of your name 2 

even though our sins speak out against us. 3 

Indeed, 4  we have turned away from you many times.

We have sinned against you.

Psalms 79:9-10

9:7 “You are righteous, 11  O Lord, but we are humiliated this day 12  – the people 13  of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far away in all the countries in which you have scattered them, because they have behaved unfaithfully toward you.

Daniel 9:15-19

Context

9:15 “Now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with great power 14  and made a name for yourself that is remembered to this day – we have sinned and behaved wickedly. 9:16 O Lord, according to all your justice, 15  please turn your raging anger 16  away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. For due to our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people are mocked by all our neighbors.

9:17 “So now, our God, accept 17  the prayer and requests of your servant, and show favor to 18  your devastated sanctuary for your own sake. 19  9:18 Listen attentively, 20  my God, and hear! [14:7]  1 tn The words “Then I said” are not in the text. However, it cannot be a continuation of the Lord’s speech and the people have consistently refused to acknowledge their sin. The fact that the prayer here and in vv. 19-22 are followed by an address from God to Jeremiah regarding prayer (cf. 4:11 and the interchanges there between God and Jeremiah and 15:1) also argues that the speaker is Jeremiah. He is again identifying with his people (cf. 8:18-9:2). Here he takes up the petition part of the lament which often contains elements of confession of sin and statements of trust. In 14:1-6 God portrays to Jeremiah the people’s lamentable plight instead of their describing it to him. Here Jeremiah prays what they should pray. The people are strangely silent throughout.

[14:7]  2 tn Heb “Act for the sake of your name.” The usage of “act” in this absolute, unqualified sense cf. BDB 794 s.v. עָוֹשָׂה Qal.I.r and compare the usage, e.g., in 1 Kgs 8:32 and 39. For the nuance of “for the sake of your name” compare the usage in Isa 48:9 and Ezek 20:9, 14.

[14:7]  3 tn Or “bear witness against us,” or “can be used as evidence against us,” to keep the legal metaphor. Heb “testify against.”

[14:7]  4 tn The Hebrew particle כִּי (ki) can scarcely be causal here; it is either intensive (BDB 472 s.v. כִּי 1.e) or concessive (BDB 473 s.v. כִּי 2.c). The parallel usage in Gen 18:20 argues for the intensive force as does the fact that the concessive has already been expressed by אִם (’im).

[79:9]  5 tn Heb “the glory of your name.” Here and in the following line “name” stands metonymically for God’s reputation.

[79:9]  6 tn Heb “your name.”

[79:10]  7 tn Heb “may it be known among the nations, to our eyes, the vengeance of the shed blood of your servants.”

[36:22]  8 sn In Ezek 20:22 God refrained from punishment for the sake of his holy name. Here God’s reputation is the basis for Israel’s restoration.

[9:17]  18 tn Heb “let your face shine.” This idiom pictures God smiling in favor. See Pss 31:16; 67:1; 80:3, 7, 19.

[9:17]  19 tn Heb “for the sake of my Lord.” Theodotion has “for your sake.” Cf. v. 19.

[9:18]  20 tn Heb “turn your ear.”

[9:18]  21 tn Heb “desolations.” The term refers here to the ruined condition of Judah’s towns.

[9:18]  22 tn Heb “over which your name is called.” Cf. v. 19. This expression implies that God is the owner of his city, Jerusalem. Note the use of the idiom in 2 Sam 12:28; Isa 4:1; Amos 9:12.

[9:18]  23 tn Heb “praying our supplications before you.”

[9:19]  24 tn Heb “for your name is called over your city and your people.” See the note on this expression in v 18.

[2:7]  25 tn Or possibly “to the Aeons who are about to come.”
