Luke 8:23

8:23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. Now a violent windstorm ¹  came down on the lake, ²  and the boat ³  started filling up with water, and they were in danger.

John 6:17-18

6:17 got into a boat, and started to cross the lake ⁴  to Capernaum. ⁵  (It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.) ⁶  6:18 By now a strong wind was blowing and the sea was getting rough.

John 11:5-6

11:5 (Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.) ⁷ 

11:6 So when he heard that Lazarus ⁸  was sick, he remained in the place where he was for two more days.

John 11:15

11:15 and I am glad ⁹  for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe. ¹⁰  But let us go to him.”

[8:23]  ² sn A violent windstorm came down on the lake. The Sea of Galilee is located in a depression some 700 ft (200 m) below sea level and is surrounded by hills. Frequently a rush of wind and the right mix of temperatures can cause a storm to come suddenly on the lake. Storms on the Sea of Galilee were known for their suddenness and violence.

[8:23]  ³ tn Grk “they were being swamped,” but English idiom speaks of the boat being swamped rather than the people in it, so the referent (the boat) has been supplied to reflect this usage.

[11:5]  ⁷ sn This is a parenthetical note by the author. It was necessary for the author to reaffirm Jesus’ love for Martha and her sister and Lazarus here because Jesus’ actions in the following verse appear to be contradictory.

[11:15]  ⁹ tn Grk “and I rejoice.”

[11:15]  ¹⁰ sn So that you may believe. Why does Jesus make this statement? It seems necessary to understand the disciples’ belief here in a developmental sense, because there are numerous references to the disciples’ faith previous to this in John’s Gospel, notably 2:11. Their concept of who Jesus really was is continually being expanded and challenged; they are undergoing spiritual growth; the climax is reached in the confession of Thomas in John 20:28.
