Reading the Signs

12:54 Jesus ¹  also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, ²  you say at once, ‘A rainstorm ³  is coming,’ and it does.

Luke 22:70

22:70 So ⁴  they all said, “Are you the Son of God, ⁵  then?” He answered ⁶  them, “You say ⁷  that I am.”

Luke 23:3

23:3 So ⁸  Pilate asked Jesus, ⁹  “Are you the king ¹⁰  of the Jews?” He replied, “You say so.” ¹¹ 

Luke 24:23

24:23 and when they did not find his body, they came back and said they had seen a vision of angels, ¹²  who said he was alive.

[12:54]  ¹ tn Grk “He”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity. Here καί (kai) has been translated as “also” and δέ (de) has not been translated.

[12:54]  ² sn A cloud rising in the west refers to moisture coming from the Mediterranean Sea.

[12:54]  ³ tn The term ὄμβρος (ombro") refers to heavy rain, such as in a thunderstorm (L&N 14.12).

[22:70]  ⁴ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of Jesus’ pronouncement.

[22:70]  ⁵ sn The members of the council understood the force of the claim and asked Jesus about another title, Son of God.

[22:70]  ⁶ tn Grk “He said to them.”

[22:70]  ⁷ sn Jesus’ reply, “You say that I am,” was not a denial, but a way of giving a qualified positive response: “You have said it, but I do not quite mean what you think.”

[23:3]  ⁷ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of the charges brought in the previous verse.

[23:3]  ⁸ tn Grk “him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[23:3]  ⁹ sn “Are you the king of the Jews?” Pilate was interested only in the third charge, because of its political implications of sedition against Rome.

[23:3]  ¹⁰ sn The reply “You say so” is somewhat enigmatic, like Jesus’ earlier reply to the Jewish leadership in 22:70.

[24:23]  ¹⁰ sn The men in dazzling attire mentioned in v. 4 are identified as angels here.
