[13:1]  1 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “now” to indicate the transition to a new topic.

[13:1]  2 sn This is an event that otherwise is unattested, though several events similar to it are noted in Josephus (J. W. 2.9.2-4 [2.169-177]; Ant. 13.13.5 [13.372-73], 18.3.1-2 [18.55-62]; 18.4.1 [18.85-87]). It would have caused a major furor.

[14:1]  3 tn Grk “Now it happened that one.” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated. Here καί (kai) has been translated as “now” to indicate the transition to a new topic.

[14:1]  4 tn Grk “to eat bread,” an idiom for participating in a meal.

[14:1]  5 tn Grk “a ruler of the Pharisees.” He was probably a synagogue official.

[14:1]  6 sn See the note on Pharisees in 5:17.

[14:1]  7 sn Watching…closely is a graphic term meaning to lurk and watch; see Luke 11:53-54.

[18:7]  5 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[18:7]  6 sn The prayers have to do with the righteous who cry out to him to receive justice. The context assumes the righteous are persecuted.

[18:7]  7 tn The emphatic particles in this sentence indicate that God will indeed give justice to the righteous.

[18:7]  8 sn The issue of delay has produced a whole host of views for this verse. (1) Does this assume provision to endure in the meantime? Or (2) does it mean God restricts the level of persecution until he comes? Either view is possible.
