[6:27]  1 sn Love your enemies is the first of four short exhortations that call for an unusual response to those who are persecuting disciples. Disciples are to relate to hostility in a completely unprecedented manner.

[7:29]  2 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “now” to indicate the parenthetical nature of the comment by the author.

[7:29]  3 sn See the note on tax collectors in 3:12.

[7:29]  4 tn Or “vindicated God”; Grk “justified God.” This could be expanded to “vindicated and responded to God.” The point is that God’s goodness and grace as evidenced in the invitation to John was justified and responded to by the group one might least expect, tax collector and sinners. They had more spiritual sensitivity than others. The contrastive response is clear from v. 30.

[7:29]  5 tn The participle βαπτισθέντες (baptisqente") has been translated as a causal adverbial participle.

[8:50]  3 tn Grk “answered.”

[8:50]  4 tn Or “will be delivered”; Grk “will be saved.” This should not be understood as an expression for full salvation in the immediate context; it refers only to the girl’s healing.

[11:28]  4 tn Grk “said.”

[11:28]  5 sn This is another reference to hearing and doing the word of God, which here describes Jesus’ teaching; see Luke 8:21.

[19:48]  5 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.

[19:48]  7 sn All the people hung on his words is an idiom for intent, eager listening. Jesus’ popularity and support made it unwise for the leadership to seize him.

[22:71]  6 tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[22:71]  7 sn We have heard it ourselves. The Sanhedrin regarded the answer as convicting Jesus. They saw it as blasphemous to claim such intimacy and shared authority with God, a claim so serious and convicting that no further testimony was needed.

[22:71]  8 tn Grk “from his own mouth” (an idiom).
