7:29 (Now ¹  all the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, ²  acknowledged ³  God’s justice, because they had been baptized ⁴  with John’s baptism.

12:8 “I ⁵  tell you, whoever acknowledges ⁶  me before men, ⁷  the Son of Man will also acknowledge ⁸  before God’s angels.

Luke 22:25

22:25 So ⁹  Jesus ¹⁰  said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ ¹¹ 

[7:29]  ¹ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “now” to indicate the parenthetical nature of the comment by the author.

[7:29]  ³ tn Or “vindicated God”; Grk “justified God.” This could be expanded to “vindicated and responded to God.” The point is that God’s goodness and grace as evidenced in the invitation to John was justified and responded to by the group one might least expect, tax collector and sinners. They had more spiritual sensitivity than others. The contrastive response is clear from v. 30.

[7:29]  ⁴ tn The participle βαπτισθέντες (baptisqente") has been translated as a causal adverbial participle.

[12:8]  ⁵ tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[12:8]  ⁶ tn Or “confesses.”

[12:8]  ⁷ tn Although this is a generic reference and includes both males and females, in this context “men” has been retained because of the wordplay with the Son of Man and the contrast with the angels. The same is true of the occurrence of “men” in v. 9.

[12:8]  ⁸ sn This acknowledgment will take place at the judgment. Of course, the Son of Man is a reference to Jesus as it has been throughout the Gospel. On Jesus and judgment, see 22:69; Acts 10:42-43; 17:31.

[22:25]  ⁹ tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of the dispute among the apostles.

[22:25]  ¹⁰ tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[22:25]  ¹¹ sn The title ‘benefactor,’ highlighting grace and meaning something like “helper of the people,” was even given to tyrants (2 Macc 4:2; 3 Macc 3:19; Josephus, J. W. 3.9.8 [3.459]).
