12:1 Meanwhile, ⁵  when many thousands of the crowd had gathered so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus ⁶  began to speak first to his disciples, “Be on your guard against ⁷  the yeast of the Pharisees, ⁸  which is hypocrisy. ⁹

[8:22]  ¹ tn Grk “Now it happened that one.” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated. Here δέ (de) has not been translated either.

[8:22]  ² tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[8:22]  ³ sn A boat that held all the disciples would be of significant size.

[8:22]  ⁴ tn Grk “lake, and.” Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the response to Jesus’ request. In addition, because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[12:1]  ⁵ tn The phrase ἐν οἷς (en Jois) can be translated “meanwhile.”

[12:1]  ⁶ tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[12:1]  ⁷ tn According to L&N 27.59, “to pay attention to, to keep on the lookout for, to be alert for, to be on your guard against.” This is another Lukan present imperative calling for constant vigilance.

[12:1]  ⁹ sn The pursuit of popularity can lead to hypocrisy, if one is not careful.

[12:36]  ⁹ tn That is, like slaves (who are mentioned later, vv. 37-38), although the term ἀνθρώποις (anqrwpoi") is used here. Since in this context it appears generic rather than gender-specific, the translation “people” is employed.

[12:36]  ¹⁰ sn An ancient wedding celebration could last for days (Tob 11:18).
