8:24 They ¹  came ²  and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, ³  we are about to die!” So ⁴  he got up and rebuked ⁵  the wind and the raging waves; ⁶  they died down, and it was calm.

Fear God, Not People

12:1 Meanwhile, ⁷  when many thousands of the crowd had gathered so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus ⁸  began to speak first to his disciples, “Be on your guard against ⁹  the yeast of the Pharisees, ¹⁰  which is hypocrisy. ¹¹

[8:24]  ⁶ sn Who has authority over the seas and winds is discussed in the OT: Ps 104:3; 135:7; 107:23-30. When Jesus rebuked the wind and the raging waves he was making a statement about who he was.

[12:1]  ⁷ tn The phrase ἐν οἷς (en Jois) can be translated “meanwhile.”

[12:1]  ⁸ tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[12:1]  ⁹ tn According to L&N 27.59, “to pay attention to, to keep on the lookout for, to be alert for, to be on your guard against.” This is another Lukan present imperative calling for constant vigilance.
