Herod’s Confusion about Jesus

9:7 Now Herod ¹  the tetrarch ²  heard about everything that was happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed, ³  because some people were saying that John ⁴  had been raised from the dead,

19:27 But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king, ⁵  bring them here and slaughter ⁶  them ⁷  in front of me!’”

19:47 Jesus ⁸  was teaching daily in the temple courts. The chief priests and the experts in the law ⁹  and the prominent leaders among the people were seeking to assassinate ¹⁰  him,

[9:7]  ⁴ sn John refers to John the Baptist, whom Herod had beheaded (v. 9).

[19:27]  ⁶ tn This term, when used of people rather than animals, has some connotations of violence and mercilessness (L&N 20.72).

[19:27]  ⁷ sn Slaughter them. To reject the king is to face certain judgment from him.

[19:47]  ⁹ tn Grk “And he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity. Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.
