[4:20]  1 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[4:20]  2 sn The expression followed him pictures discipleship, which means that to learn from Jesus is to follow him as the guiding priority of one’s life.

[4:22]  3 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[26:49]  5 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[26:49]  6 sn Judas’ act of betrayal when he kissed Jesus is especially sinister when it is realized that it was common in the culture of the times for a disciple to kiss his master when greeting him.

[26:74]  7 tn It seems most likely that this refers to a real rooster crowing, although a number of scholars have suggested that “cockcrow” is a technical term referring to the trumpet call which ended the third watch of the night (from midnight to 3 a.m.). This would then be a reference to the Roman gallicinium (ἀλεκτοροφωνία, alektorofwnia; the term is used in Mark 13:35 and is found in some mss [Ì37vid,45 Ë1] in Matt 26:34) which would have been sounded at 3 a.m.; in this case Jesus would have prophesied a precise time by which the denials would have taken place. For more details see J. H. Bernard, St. John (ICC), 2:604. However, in light of the fact that Mark mentions the rooster crowing twice (Mark 14:72) and in Luke 22:60 the words are reversed (ἐφώνησεν ἀλέκτωρ, efwnhsen alektwr), it is more probable that a real rooster is in view. In any event natural cockcrow would have occurred at approximately 3 a.m. in Palestine at this time of year (March-April) anyway.

[8:3]  9 sn Touched. This touch would have rendered Jesus ceremonially unclean (Lev 14:46; also Mishnah, m. Nega’im 3.1; 11.1; 12.1; 13.6-12).

[13:5]  11 tn Here and in vv. 7 and 8 δέ (de) has not been translated.

[13:5]  12 sn The rocky ground in Palestine would be a limestone base lying right under the soil.

[13:5]  13 tn Grk “it did not have enough depth of earth.”

[14:22]  13 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[21:2]  15 tn Grk “the village lying before you” (BDAG 530 s.v. κατέναντι 2.b).

[25:15]  17 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[25:15]  18 sn A talent was equal to 6000 denarii. See the note on this term in 18:24.

[27:48]  19 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[27:48]  20 sn Sour wine refers to cheap wine that was called in Latin posca, a cheap vinegar wine diluted heavily with water. It was the drink of slaves and soldiers, and was probably there for the soldiers who had performed the crucifixion.

[27:48]  21 tn Grk “a reed.”

[24:29]  21 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[24:29]  22 tn Traditionally, “tribulation.”

[24:29]  23 sn An allusion to Isa 13:10, 34:4 (LXX); Joel 2:10. The heavens were seen as the abode of heavenly forces, so their shaking indicates distress in the spiritual realm. Although some take the powers as a reference to bodies in the heavens (like stars and planets, “the heavenly bodies,” NIV) this is not as likely.
