Matthew 17:14-21

17:14

to him ... before him <846> [when.]

knelt <1120> [kneeling.]

17:15

have mercy <1653> [have.]

because ........ for <3754 1063> [for.]

he has seizures <4583> [he is.]

[Seleniazomai <\\See definition 4583\\>,] from [selene <\\See definition 4582\\>,] the moon, one who was affected with his disorder at the change and full of the moon. This is the case in some kinds of madness and epilepsy. This youth was no doubt epileptic; but it was evidently either produced or taken advantage of by a demon or evil spirit.

because ........ for ... often <3754 1063 4178> [for ofttimes.]

17:16

but they were ... able <2532 1410> [and they.]

17:17

How much ........ How much longer <2193 2071> [how long shall I be.]

17:18

of ........ from <575> [from.]

17:19

17:20

because of <1223> [Because.]

if <1437> [If.]

faith <4102> [faith.]

That is, as Bp. Pearce well remarks, a thriving and increasing faith, like a grain of mustard seed, which, from being the least of seeds, becomes the greatest of all herbs.

<2848> [a grain.]

nothing <3762> [nothing.]

17:21

<5124> [this.]

<1508> [but.]

Mark 9:14-29

9:14

9:15

they were amazed <1568> [were.]

9:16

What <5101> [What.]

9:17

I brought <5342> [I.]

9:18

him it throws him down .................... it <846 4486> [teareth him. or, dasheth him.]

he foams at the mouth <875> [he foameth.]

As these symptoms accord very much with those of epileptic persons, some have ventured to assert that it was no real possession; but the evangelist expressly affirms that he had a "dumb spirit" which tare him, that our Lord charged him to "come out of him," etc.

grinds <5149> [gnasheth.]

and .......... and ............ but they were ... able <2532 2480> [and they.]

9:19

You unbelieving <5599 571> [O faithless.]

9:20

9:21

How <4214> [How.]

9:22

<1536> [if.]

have compassion <4697> [have.]

9:23

If <1487> [If.]

9:24

<3326> [with.]

help <997> [help.]

9:25

he rebuked <2008> [he rebuked.]

Mute <216> [thou.]

If this had been only a natural disease, as some have contended, could our Lord with any propriety have thus addressed it? If the demoniacal possession had been false, or merely a vulgar error, would our Lord, the Revealer of truth, have thus established falsehood, sanctioned error, or encouraged deception, by teaching men to ascribe effects to the malice and power of evil spirits, which they had no agency in producing? Impossible! Such conduct is utterly unworthy the sacred character of the Redeemer.

I command <1473 2004> [I charge.]

9:26

shrieked <2896> [cried.]

9:27

9:28

asked <1905> [asked.]

<3754> [Why.]

9:29

This <5124> [This.]

by prayer <1722 4335> [by prayer.]

<3521> [fasting.]
