  To shepherds as they watched by night Appeared a host of angels bright; Behold the tender Babe, they said, In yonder lowly manger laid. At Bethlehem, in David’s town, As Micah did of old make known; ’Tis Jesus Christ, your Lord and King, Who doth to all salvation bring. Oh, then rejoice that through His Son God is with sinners now at one; Made like yourselves of flesh and blood, Your Brother is the eternal God. What harm can sin and death then do? The true God now abides with you. Let hell and Satan rage and chafe, Christ is your Brother—ye are safe. Not one He will or can forsake Who Him his confidence doth make. Let all his wiles the Tempter try, You may his utmost powers defy. Ye shall and must at last prevail; God’s own ye are, ye cannot fail.   Veiled in darkness Judah lay, Waiting for the promised day, While across the shadowy night Streamed a flood of glorious light, Heav’nly voices chanting then, “Peace on earth, good will to men.” Still the earth in darkness lies.   Dayspring of eternity! Hide no more Thy radiant dawning! Light from light’s exhaustless sea, Shine on us afresh this morning! And dispel with glorious might All our night. Let Thy mercies’ morning dew Rouse our conscience from its blindness: Gladden life’s dry plains anew With the rivers of Thy kindness; Water daily us Thy flock From the rock. Let the glow of love destroy Cold obedience faintly given, Wake our hearts to love and joy With the flushing eastern heaven; Let us truly rise ere yet Life hath set. Through this dark and tearful place Never be Thy light denied us. O Thou glorious Sun of grace, To yon world of gladness guide us, When to joys that never end We ascend! Ah!   Rise, O Salem, rise and shine; Lo, the Gentiles hail thy waking; Herald of a morn divine, See the Dayspring o’er us breaking, Telling God hath called to mind Those who long in darkness pined. O how blindly we did stray, Ere this Sun our earth had brightened; Heaven we sought not, for no ray Had our wildered eyes enlightened: All our looks were earthward bent, All our strength on earth was spent. But the Dayspring from on high Hath arisen with beams unclouded, And we see before Him fly All the heavy gloom that shrouded This sad earth, where sin and woe Seemed to reign o’er all below.
