[34:19]  1 tn The Hebrew text uses the singular form; the representative or typical godly person is envisioned.

[34:19]  2 tn Or “trials.”

[34:19]  3 tn The Hebrew imperfect verbal form highlights the generalizing statement and draws attention to the fact that the Lord typically delivers the godly.

[34:19]  4 tn Heb “him,” agreeing with the singular form in the preceding line.

[12:6]  5 sn A quotation from Prov 3:11-12.

[12:1]  6 tn Grk “having such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us.”

[1:6]  7 tn Or “And again when he brings.” The translation adopted in the text looks forward to Christ’s second coming to earth. Some take “again” to introduce the quotation (as in 1:5) and understand this as Christ’s first coming, but this view does not fit well with Heb 2:7. Others understand it as his exaltation/ascension to heaven, but this takes the phrase “into the world” in an unlikely way.

[1:6]  8 sn A quotation combining themes from Deut 32:43 and Ps 97:7.

[1:7]  9 sn The Greek correlative conjunctions μέν and δέ (men and de) emphasize the contrastive parallelism of vs. 7 (what God says about the angels) over against vv. 8-9 and vv. 10-12 (what God says about the son).

[1:7]  10 tn Grk “He who makes.”

[1:7]  11 sn A quotation from Ps 104:4.

[3:9]  12 tn Grk “behold” (L&N 91.13).

[3:9]  13 sn See the note on synagogue in 2:9.

[3:9]  14 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “yet” to indicate the contrast between what these people claimed and what they were.

[3:9]  15 tn The verb here is ποιέω (poiew), but in this context it has virtually the same meaning as δίδωμι (didwmi) used at the beginning of the verse. Stylistic variation like this is typical of Johannine literature.

[3:9]  16 tn The verb here is προσκυνήσουσιν (proskunhsousin), normally used to refer to worship.

[3:9]  17 tn Or “and know,” “and recognize.”
