Psalms 44:2

44:2

occupy <03423> [drive out.]

<07489> [how thou didst afflict, etc.]

Or, rather, "how thou didst afflict the peoples (of Canaan,) and madest them (the Hebrews) to shoot forth;" for {shalach} is to send forth in any manner, and is applied to a vine spreading its roots, etc. Ps 89:9; Eze 17:6; Jer 17:8; and this sense is parallel with plantedst in the former line.

Psalms 78:54-55

Psalms 80:8

80:8

vine <01612> [a vine.]

drove <01644> [thou hast cast.]

This most elegant allegory, which is every where well supported, is frequently employed by sacred writers: see the Parallel Passages.

Isaiah 5:1-4

5:1

vine <08321> [the choicest vine.]

{Sorek,} in Arabic, {sharik,} certainly denotes an excellent vine; but some with Bp. Lowth, retain it as a proper name. Sorek was a valley lying between Askelon and Gaza, so called from the excellence of its vines.

built <01129> [and built.]

constructed <02672> [made. Heb. hewed. a winepress.]

waited for <06960> [he looked.]
