[22:7]  1 tn Or “scoff at, deride, mock.”

[22:7]  2 tn Heb “they separate with a lip.” Apparently this refers to their verbal taunting.

[22:7]  3 sn Shake their heads. Apparently this refers to a taunting gesture. See also Job 16:4; Ps 109:25; Lam 2:15.

[22:8]  4 tn The words “they say” are supplied in the translation for clarification and for stylistic reasons. The psalmist here quotes the sarcastic taunts of his enemies.

[22:8]  5 tn Heb “roll [yourself].” The Hebrew verb גלל here has the sense of “commit” (see Prov 16:3). The imperatival form in the Hebrew text indicates the enemies here address the psalmist. Since they refer to him in the third person in the rest of the verse, some prefer to emend the verb to a perfect, “he commits himself to the Lord.”

[22:8]  6 tn Heb “Let him”; the referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[22:8]  7 tn Heb “Let him”; the referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[22:8]  8 tn That is, “for he [the Lord] delights in him [the psalmist].” For other cases where the expression “delight in” refers to God’s delight in a person, see Num 14:8; 1 Kgs 10:9; Pss 18:19; 40:8.

[31:18]  9 tn Heb “the [ones which].”

[31:18]  10 tn Or “godly.”

[42:10]  11 tc Heb “with a shattering in my bones my enemies taunt me.” A few medieval Hebrew mss and Symmachus’ Greek version read “like” instead of “with.”

[42:10]  12 sn “Where is your God?” The enemies ask this same question in v. 3.

[44:14]  13 tn The prefixed verbal form is a preterite (without vav [ו] consecutive).

[44:14]  14 tn Heb “a proverb,” or “[the subject of] a mocking song.”

[44:14]  15 tn Heb “a shaking of the head among the peoples.” Shaking the head was a derisive gesture (see Jer 18:16; Lam 2:15).

[44:15]  16 tn Heb “all the day my humiliation [is] in front of me.”

[44:15]  17 tn Heb “and the shame of my face covers me.”

[44:16]  18 tn Heb “from the voice of one who ridicules and insults, from the face of an enemy and an avenger.” See Ps 8:2.

[123:3]  19 tn Heb “for greatly we are filled [with] humiliation.”

[123:4]  20 tn Heb “greatly our soul is full to it.”

[143:3]  21 tn Or “for.”

[143:3]  22 tn Heb “an enemy.” The singular is used in a representative sense to describe a typical member of the larger group of enemies (note the plural “enemies” in vv. 9, 12).

[143:3]  23 tn Heb “he crushes on the ground my life.”

[143:3]  24 tn Or “sit.”

[143:3]  25 sn Dark regions refers to Sheol, which the psalmist views as a dark place located deep in the ground (see Ps 88:6).

[143:4]  26 tn Heb “my spirit grows faint.”

[143:4]  27 tn Heb “in my midst my heart is shocked.” For a similar use of the Hitpolel of שָׁמֵם (shamem), see Isa 59:16; 63:5.

[1:5]  28 tn Heb “her foes became [her] head” (הָיוּ צָרֶיהָ לְרֹאשׁ, hayu tsareha lÿrosh) or more idiomatically “have come out on top.” This is a Semitic idiom for domination or subjugation, with “head” as a metaphor for leader.

[1:5]  29 tn The nuance expressed in the LXX is that her enemies prosper (cf. KJV, NASB, NRSV, NLT).

[1:5]  30 tn Heb “because of her many rebellions.” The plural פְּשָׁעֶיהָ (pÿshaeha, “her rebellions”) is an example of the plural of repeated action or characteristic behavior (see IBHS 121 §7.4.2c). The 3rd person feminine singular suffix (“her”) probably functions as a subjective genitive: “her rebellions” = “she has rebelled.”

[1:5]  31 tn The singular noun שְׁבִי (shÿvi) is a collective singular, meaning “captives, prisoners.” It functions as an adverbial accusative of state: “[they] went away as captives.”

[22:53]  32 tn Grk “in the temple.”

[22:53]  33 tn Grk “lay hands on me.”

[22:53]  34 tn Or “your time.”

[22:53]  35 tn Or “authority,” “domain.”
