Strongs On/Off
Context
David Thanks God
16:7 That day David first gave to Asaph and his colleagues this song of thanks to the Lord: 16:8 Give thanks to the Lord! Call on his name! Make known his accomplishments among the nations! 16:9 Sing to him! Make music to him! Tell about all his miraculous deeds! 16:10 Boast about his holy name! Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice! 16:11 Seek the Lord and the strength he gives! Seek his presence continually! 16:12 Recall the miraculous deeds he performed, his mighty acts and the judgments he decreed, 16:13 O children of Israel, God’s servant, you descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen ones! 16:14 He is the Lord our God; he carries out judgment throughout the earth. 16:15 Remember continually his covenantal decree, the promise he made to a thousand generations16:16 the promise he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac! 16:17 He gave it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as a lasting promise, 16:18 saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance.” 16:19 When they were few in number, just a very few, and foreign residents within it, 16:20 they wandered from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another. 16:21 He let no one oppress them, he disciplined kings for their sake, 16:22 saying, “Don’t touch my anointed ones! Don’t harm my prophets!” 16:23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Announce every day how he delivers! 16:24 Tell the nations about his splendor, tell all the nations about his miraculous deeds! 16:25 For the Lord is great and certainly worthy of praise, he is more awesome than all gods. 16:26 For all the gods of the nations are worthless, but the Lord made the heavens. 16:27 Majestic splendor emanates from him, he is the source of strength and joy. 16:28 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the nations, ascribe to the Lord splendor and strength! 16:29 Ascribe to the Lord the splendor he deserves! Bring an offering and enter his presence! Worship the Lord in holy attire! 16:30 Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is established, it cannot be moved. 16:31 Let the heavens rejoice, and the earth be happy! Let the nations say, ‘The Lord reigns!’ 16:32 Let the sea and everything in it shout! Let the fields and everything in them celebrate! 16:33 Then let the trees of the forest shout with joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth! 16:34 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good and his loyal love endures. 16:35 Say this prayer: “Deliver us, O God who delivers us! Gather us! Rescue us from the nations! Then we will give thanks to your holy name, and boast about your praiseworthy deeds.” 16:36 May the Lord God of Israel be praised, in the future and forevermore. Then all the people said, “We agree! Praise the Lord!”

Hereby it is implied, that after this he delivered many other psalms into their hands, to be sung by them to the praise of God in his public service. We shall find it in the same words, in Psa 105:1-15 and Psa 96:1-11, all but the three last verses.

This psalm or prayer was made by David for the use of the church, not only in that present time, but in future ages, in which David foresaw by the spirit of prophecy, the Israelites would forsake God, and for their apostacy be dispersed among the Heathens. In the midst of our praises, we must not forget to pray for those servants of God that are in distress. When we are rejoicing in God's favours, we should remember our afflicted brethren, and pray for their deliverance as our own. We are members one of another.

Among the other preparations for this solemn inauguration, the royal bard had composed a special hymn for the occasion. Doubtless it had been previously in the hands of Asaph and his assistants, but it was now publicly committed to them as they entered for the first time on the performance of their sacred duties. It occupies the greater part of this chapter (1Ch. 16:8-36), and seems to have been compiled from other psalms of David, previously known to the Israelites, as the whole of it will be found, with very slight variations, in Psa 96:1-13; Psa 105:1-15; Psa 106:47-48. In the form, however, in which it is given by the sacred historian, it seems to have been the first psalm given for use in the tabernacle service. Abounding, as it does, with the liveliest ascriptions of praise to God for the revelation of His glorious character and the display of His marvellous works and containing, as it does, so many pointed allusions to the origin, privileges, and peculiar destiny of the chosen people, it was admirably calculated to animate the devotions and call forth the gratitude of the assembled multitude.

JFB: 1Ch 16:36 - -- (Compare Psa 72:19-20; Psa 106:48). In the former, the author of the doxology utters the "amen" himself, while in the latter the people are exhorted t...

(Compare Psa 72:19-20; Psa 106:48). In the former, the author of the doxology utters the "amen" himself, while in the latter the people are exhorted to say "amen." This may arise from the fact that the latter psalm originally concluded with the injunction to say "amen." But in this historical account of the festival, it was necessary to relate that the people obeyed this injunction on the occasion referred to, and therefore the words "let them praise," were altered into "and they praised" [BERTHEAU].

Touch not mine anointed - By this title the patriarchs are generally understood: they had a regal and sacerdotal power in the order of God. In the behalf of the patriarchs God had often especially interfered: in behalf of Abraham, Gen 12:17; Gen 20:3; and of Jacob, Gen 31:24; Gen 34:26; Gen 35:5. But the title may be applied to all the Jewish people, who were the anointed, as they were the elect and peculiar people of God. See on Heb 11:26 (note).

Save us, O God of our salvation - As he is the saving God, so we may pray to him to save us. To pray to God under the attribute the influence of which we need, serves to inspire much confidence. I am weak; Almighty God, help me! I am ignorant; O thou Father of lights, teach me! I am lost; O merciful God, save me; etc. See the notes on Psa 96:1-13 (note) and Psalm 105 (note).

This passage is interposed by the writer of Chronicles between two sentences of the parallel passage in Samuel. It contains a detailed account of the service which David instituted at this time, a service out of which grew the more elaborate service of the temple. The language of much of the passage is remarkably archaic, and there can be no reasonable doubt that it is in the main an extract from a record of the time of David.

1Ch 16:5

The occurrence of the name "Jeiel"twice in this list is considered suspicious. Hence, the first "Jeiel"is thought to be a corrupt reading for "Aziel"1Ch 15:20, or "Jaaziel"1Ch 15:18.

1Ch 16:8

The Psalm here put before us by the Chronicler, as sung liturgically by Asaph and his brethren on the day of the ark’ s entrance into Jerusalem, accords closely with the passages in the present Book of Psalms noted in the marg reff.

It is, apparently, a thanksgiving service composed for the occasion out of Psalms previously existing.

1Ch 16:39

This is the first mention that we have of Gibeon as the place at which the tabernacle of the congregation now rested. Previously it had been at Nob 1Sa 21:1-6, from where it was removed probably at the time of the slaughter of the priests by Doeg 1Sa 22:18-19. It is uncertain whether Gibeon was regarded as a "high place"before the transfer to it of the tabernacle: hut thenceforth, until the completion of Solomon’ s Temple, it was the "great high place"1Ki 3:4 - a second center of the national worship which for above 50 years was divided between Gibeon and Jerusalem.

1Ch 16:40

Upon the altar of the burnt offering - The original altar of burnt-offering Exo 27:1-8 continued at Gibeon with the tabernacle 2Ch 1:3, 2Ch 1:5. David must have erected a new altar for sacrifice at Jerusalem 1Ch 16:1. The sacrifices commanded by the Law were, it appears, offered at the former place; at the latter were offered voluntary additional sacrifices.

1Ch 16:41

The rest ... - Rather, "the rest of the chosen ones, who were mentioned by name."The "chosen ones"were "mentioned by name"in 1Ch 15:17-24. A portion of them, namely, those named in 1Ch 16:5-6, conducted the service in Jerusalem; the remainder were employed in the worship at Gibeon.

David delivered first this psalm whereby it is implied, that after this he delivered many other psalms successively into their hands, to be sung by them to the praise of God in his public service. See 2Sa 23:1 2Ch 29:30 . As for the matter of this psalm, I shall defer the explication of it till I come to the Book of Psalms, where we shall find it in the same words, in Ps 96 Ps 105 .

Deliver us from the heathen: this might seem an improper and unseasonable prayer for David’ s time, when the Israelites were not yet scattered amongst the heathen, but indeed it was not so; partly because they had already been sadly divided by a civil war among themselves; and though they were now externally and visibly united under David, yet he might justly think that there were some who yet retained in their hearts their old leaven, their hatred of him, and their affection to Saul, which might hereafter break forth when occasion was offered, as it did, 2Sa 16:8 ; and therefore he justly prays that they may be gathered and united together in hearty love, as well as in outward show: and partly because this psalm or prayer was made by David for the use of the church, not only in that present time, but in future ages, in which David foresaw by the Spirit of prophecy, or by consideration of those ancient and sacred predictions, De 31, De 32 , that the Israelites would one time or other forsake God, and for their apostacy be dispersed among the heathens, when they should have great and particular need of this prayer.

And say, &c., is not in the psalm; and it seems not to agree with the flourishing state of David's kingdom: yet he might speak with the spirit of prophecy, or with that all his subjects might live in happiness and concord under him. (Calmet) ---

Others think that Esdras inserted these verses to be sung in the second temple, (Lyranus; Estius) when many still remained in captivity. Yet them may refer to the time of Christ. (Du Hamel)

Haydock: 1Ch 16:36 - -- And sing. Hebrew, "and Alleluia," or, "all....said, (or shall say) truth and praise be to the Lord."

And sing. Hebrew, "and Alleluia," or, "all....said, (or shall say) truth and praise be to the Lord."

Then on that day,.... The ark was brought to Zion, and the above persons appointed to minister before it:

David delivered first this psalm to thank the Lord into the hand of Asaph and his brethren to be sung by them now, and on every proper occasion; and this seems to be the first that was delivered to them; afterwards there were many more, as the titles of the psalms show; the following is composed of part of two others, as they now stand in the book of Psalms. From hence, to the end of 1Ch 16:22 is the same with Psa 105:1, with a little variation, see the notes there; and from thence to the end of 1Ch 16:33 is Psa 96:1 which see; and 1Ch 16:34 is the same with Psa 106:1, see the notes there. See Gill on Psa 106:1, Psa 107:1, Psa 105:1, Psa 105:2, Psa 105:3, Psa 105:4, Psa 105:5, Psa 105:6, Psa 105:7, Psa 105:8, Psa 105:9, Psa 105:10, Psa 105:11,on Psa 105:12, Psa 105:13, Psa 105:14,on Psa 105:15

And say ye, save us, O God of our salvation,.... The author of temporal, spiritual, and eternal salvation; the words are a direction to the singers, and those that sung with them, to express the prayer and doxology in the next verse, which both are the same with Psa 106:47. See Gill on Psa 106:47, Psa 106:48; which David directed by a spirit of prophecy, foreseeing the people of Israel would be in captivity among the Heathens; though some think these were added by Ezra; for though there was in his time a return from the captivity, yet many still remained in it.
