[16:5]  1 tn Heb “went up to Jerusalem for battle.”

[16:5]  2 tn That is, Jerusalem, Ahaz’s capital city.

[16:5]  3 tn Heb “they were unable to fight.” The object must be supplied from the preceding sentence. Elsewhere when the Niphal infinitive of לָחָם (lakham) follows the verb יָכֹל (yakhol), the infinitive appears to have the force of “prevail against.” See Num 22:11; 1 Sam 17:9; and the parallel passage in Isa 7:1.

[18:20]  1 tn Heb “you say only a word of lips, counsel and might for battle.” Sennacherib’s message appears to be in broken Hebrew at this point. The phrase “word of lips” refers to mere or empty talk in Prov 14:23.

[24:16]  1 tn Heb “the entire [group], mighty men, doers of war.”

[3:7]  1 tn Heb “went and sent.”

[3:7]  2 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Jehoshaphat) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[3:7]  3 tn Heb “I will go up – like me, like you; like my people, like your people; like my horses; like your horses.”

[3:26]  1 tn Heb “and the king of Moab saw that the battle was too strong for him.”

[3:26]  2 tn Heb “he took with him seven hundred men, who drew the sword, to break through against.”

[13:25]  1 tn Heb “from the hand of.”

[14:7]  1 tn Or “struck down.”

[25:4]  1 tn Heb “the city was breached.”

[25:4]  2 tn The Hebrew text is abrupt here: “And all the men of war by the night.” The translation attempts to capture the sense.

[25:4]  3 sn The king’s garden is mentioned again in Neh 3:15 in conjunction with the pool of Siloam and the stairs that go down from the city of David. This would have been in the southern part of the city near the Tyropean Valley which agrees with the reference to the “two walls” which were probably the walls on the eastern and western hills.

[25:4]  4 sn Heb “toward the Arabah.” The Arabah was the rift valley north and south of the Dead Sea. Here the intention was undoubtedly to escape across the Jordan to Moab or Ammon. It appears from Jer 40:14; 41:15 that the Ammonites were known to harbor fugitives from the Babylonians.

[25:19]  1 tn The parallel passage in Jer 52:25 has “seven.”

[25:19]  2 tn Heb “five seers of the king’s face.”

[25:19]  3 tn Heb “the people of the land.”
