[4:23]  1 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in 4:3.

[4:23]  2 tn Heb “commanded.”

[7:12]  3 tn Heb “will keep with you the covenant and loyalty.” On the construction used here, see v. 9.

[7:12]  4 tn Heb “which he swore on oath.” The relative pronoun modifies “covenant,” so one could translate “will keep faithfully the covenant (or promise) he made on oath to your ancestors.”

[8:18]  5 tc Smr and Lucian add “Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,” the standard way of rendering this almost stereotypical formula (cf. Deut 1:8; 6:10; 9:5, 27; 29:13; 30:20; 34:4). The MT’s harder reading presumptively argues for its originality, however.

[9:9]  7 tn Heb “in the mountain.” The demonstrative pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[10:8]  9 sn The Lord set apart the tribe of Levi. This was not the initial commissioning of the tribe of Levi to this ministry (cf. Num 3:11-13; 8:12-26), but with Aaron’s death it seemed appropriate to Moses to reiterate Levi’s responsibilities. There is no reference in the Book of Numbers to this having been done, but the account of Eleazar’s succession to the priesthood there (Num 20:25-28) would provide a setting for this to have occurred.

[10:8]  10 sn To formulate blessings. The most famous example of this is the priestly “blessing formula” of Num 6:24-26.

[17:2]  11 tn Heb “gates.”

[17:2]  12 tn Heb “does the evil in the eyes of the Lord your God.”

[31:16]  13 tn Heb “lie down with your fathers” (so NASB); NRSV “ancestors.”

[31:16]  14 tn Heb “he.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “they,” which is necessary in any case in the translation because of contemporary English style. The third person singular also occurs in the Hebrew text twice more in this verse, three times in v. 17, once in v. 18, five times in v. 20, and four times in v. 21. Each time it is translated as third person plural for stylistic reasons.

[31:16]  15 tn Heb “he.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “they.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.

[31:16]  16 tn Or “abandon” (TEV, NLT).

[31:16]  17 tn Heb “him.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “them.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.

[31:20]  15 tn Heb “him.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “them.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.

[31:20]  16 tn Heb “his.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “their.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.

[31:20]  17 tn Heb “he.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “they.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.

[31:20]  18 tn Heb “and are satisfied.”

[31:20]  19 tn Heb “he.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “they.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.
