  Behold, the Master passeth by! O seest thou not His pleading eye? With low sad voice He calleth thee, “Leave this vain world, and follow Me.” O soul, bowed down with harrowing care, Hast thou no thought for Heaven to spare? From earthly toils lift up thine eye; Behold, the Master passeth by! One heard Him calling long ago, And straightway left all things below Counting his earthly gain as loss For Jesus and His blessèd cross. That “Follow Me” his faithful ear Seemed every day afresh to hear; Its echoes stirred his spirit still, And fired his hope, and nerved his will.   The light of God is falling, Upon life’s common way; The Master’s voice is calling, “Come, walk with Me today”; No duty can seem lowly To him who lives with Thee, And all of life grows holy, O Christ of Galilee!   Jesus Christ the Lord opened up the way to glory When He died to save us from our ruined state, And He asks that we shall go tell the world the story, How His blood will save them from their awful fate. Refrain Jesus opened up the way to heaven’s gate When He died on the cross, To redeem all the lost; He prepared the road that leads To His abode, ’Tis a road marked by blood But it leads us home to God. And the way is marked by the footprints of the Savior, With His blood he made it, made it plain and straight; If you walk that way, it will lead you into heaven, Lead you safely into glory’s golden gate. Refrain Sinner, will you come and join in this heav’nly journey, Walk the bloody pathway that the Savior trod; Then when life is over and all the sheaves are garnered, You will meet the Savior and be not afraid.   Thou knowest, Lord, the weariness and sorrow Of the sad heart that comes to Thee for rest; Cares of today, and burdens for tomorrow, Blessings implored, and sins to be confessed; I come before Thee at Thy gracious word, And lay them at Thy feet: Thou knowest, Lord. Thou knowest all the present: each temptation, Each toilsome duty, each foreboding fear; All to myself assigned of tribulation, Or to belovèd ones than self more dear; All pensive memories, as I journey on, Longings for vanished smiles and voices gone. Thou knowest all the future: gleams of gladness By stormy clouds too quickly overcast; Hours of sweet fellowship, and parting sadness, And the dark river to be crossed at last; O what could confidence and hope afford To tread that path, but this, Thou knowest, Lord!   O sinner, lift the eye of faith, To true repentance turning; Bethink thee of the curse of sin, Its awful guilt discerning; Upon the Crucified One look, And thou shalt read, as in a book, What well is worthy thy learning. Look on His head, that bleeding head, With crown of thorns surrounded; Look on His sacred hands and feet Which piercing nails have wounded; See every limb with scourges rent: On Him, the Just, the Innocent, What malice hath abounded! ’Tis not alone those limbs are racked, But friends, too, are forsaking; And, more than all, for thankless man That tender heart is aching; Oh, fearful was the pain and scorn, By Jesus, Son of Mary, borne, Their peace for sinners making. None ever knew such pain before, Such infinite affliction, None ever felt a grief like His In that dread crucifixion; For us He bare those bitter throes, For us those agonizing woes, In oft renewed infliction. O sinner, mark, and ponder well Sin’s awful condemnation; Think what a sacrifice it cost To purchase Thy salvation; Had Jesus never bled and died, Then what could thee and all betide But uttermost damnation? Lord, give us grace to flee from sin, And Satan’s wiles ensnaring, And from those everlasting flames For evil ones preparing. Jesu, we thank Thee, and entreat To rest forever at Thy feet, Thy heavenly glory sharing.
