[9:17]  1 tn Grk “and placing his hands on Saul, he said.” The participle ἐπιθείς (epiqei") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style. For the same reason καί (kai) has not been translated before the participle.

[9:17]  2 tn Grk “on him”; the referent (Saul) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:17]  3 tn Grk “on the road in which you came,” but the relative clause makes for awkward English style, so it was translated as a temporal clause (“as you came here”).

[9:17]  4 sn Be filled with the Holy Spirit. Here someone who is not an apostle (Ananias) commissions another person with the Spirit.

[4:28]  5 tc Most mss (א A C D2 Ψ 062 Ï lat sy bo) read “we” here, while “you” is found in Ì46 B D* F G 0261vid 0278 33 1739 al sa. It is more likely that a copyist, noticing the first person pronouns in vv. 26 and 31, changed a second person pronoun here to first person for consistency.

[4:28]  6 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:11.

[4:29]  7 tn Grk “according to the flesh”; see the note on the phrase “by natural descent” in 4:23.

[4:29]  8 tn Or “the one born by the Spirit’s [power].”

[4:1]  9 tn Grk “a small child.” The Greek term νήπιος (nhpios) refers to a young child, no longer a helpless infant but probably not more than three or four years old (L&N 9.43). The point in context, though, is that this child is too young to take any responsibility for the management of his assets.

[4:1]  10 tn Grk “master” or “lord” (κύριος, kurios).

[3:1]  11 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 2:11.

[3:1]  12 tn Grk “of our confession.”

[3:1]  13 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 2:11.

[3:1]  14 tn Grk “of our confession.”

[1:1]  15 tn Or “spoke formerly.”

[1:1]  16 tn Or “parts.” The idea is that God’s previous revelation came in many parts and was therefore fragmentary or partial (L&N 63.19), in comparison with the final and complete revelation contained in God’s Son. However, some interpret πολυμερῶς (polumerw") in Heb 1:1 to mean “on many different occasions” and would thus translate “many times” (L&N 67.11). This is the option followed by the NIV: “at many times and in various ways.” Finally, this word is also understood to refer to the different manners in which something may be done, and would then be translated “in many different ways” (L&N 89.81). In this last case, the two words πολυμερῶς and πολυτρόπως (polutropw") mutually reinforce one another (“in many and various ways,” NRSV).

[1:1]  17 tn These two phrases are emphasized in Greek by being placed at the beginning of the sentence and by alliteration.

[1:1]  18 tn Grk “to the fathers.”

[1:1]  19 tn Or “spoke formerly.”

[1:1]  20 tn Or “parts.” The idea is that God’s previous revelation came in many parts and was therefore fragmentary or partial (L&N 63.19), in comparison with the final and complete revelation contained in God’s Son. [1:1]  22 tn Grk “to the fathers.”

[1:1]  26 tn Grk “to the fathers.”

[5:1]  27 tn Grk “from among men,” but since the point in context is shared humanity (rather than shared maleness), the plural Greek term ἀνθρώπων (anqrwpwn) has been translated “people.”

[5:1]  28 tn Grk “who is taken from among people is appointed.”

[5:1]  29 tn Grk “appointed on behalf of people in reference to things relating to God.”
