They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation. 9

[10:9]  1 tn Or “in its den.”

[10:9]  2 tn The verb, which also appears in the next line, occurs only here and in Judg 21:21.

[10:9]  3 tn The singular form is collective (see v. 10) or refers to the typical or representative oppressed individual.

[10:9]  4 tn Or “when he [i.e., the wicked man] pulls in his net.”

[64:2]  5 tn Heb “workers of wickedness.”

[64:3]  6 tn Heb “who.” A new sentence was started here in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[64:3]  7 tn Heb “a bitter word.”

[64:4]  8 tn The psalmist uses the singular because he is referring to himself here as representative of a larger group.

[64:4]  9 tn Heb “and are unafraid.” The words “of retaliation” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[64:5]  10 tn Heb “they give strength to themselves, an evil matter [or “word”].”

[64:5]  11 tn Heb “they report about hiding.”

[64:5]  12 tn Heb “they say.”

[64:5]  13 tn If this is a direct quotation (cf. NASB, NIV), the pronoun “them” refers to the snares mentioned in the previous line. If it is an indirect quotation, then the pronoun may refer to the enemies themselves (cf. NEB, which is ambiguous). Some translations retain the direct quotation but alter the pronoun to “us,” referring clearly to the enemies (cf. NRSV).

[140:5]  14 tn Heb “and ropes,” but many prefer to revocalize the noun as a participle (חֹבְלִים, khovÿlim) from the verb חָבַל (khaval, “act corruptly”).

[141:9]  15 tn Heb “and the traps of the doers of evil.”

[141:2]  16 tn Heb “may my prayer be established [like] incense before you, the uplifting of my hands [like] an evening offering.”

[17:1]  17 sn Psalm 17. The psalmist asks God to intervene on his behalf because his life is threatened by dangerous enemies. He appeals to divine justice, for he is certain of his own innocence. Because he is innocent, he expects to encounter God and receive an assuring word.

[17:1]  18 tn Heb “hear, Lord, what is just.”

[17:1]  19 tn Heb “Listen to my prayer, [made] without lips of deceit.”

[17:2]  20 tn Heb “From before you may my justice come out.” The prefixed verbal form יָצָא (yatsa’) could be taken as an imperfect, but following the imperatives in v. 1, it is better understood as a jussive of prayer.

[17:2]  21 tn Heb “May your eyes look at what is right.” The prefixed verbal form is understood as jussive. (See also the preceding note on the word “behalf.”)

[17:3]  22 tn Heb “you tested my heart.”

[17:3]  23 tn Heb “you visited [at] night.”

[17:3]  24 tc Heb “you tested me, you do not find, I plan, my mouth will not cross over.” The Hebrew verbal form זַמֹּתִי (zammotiy) is a Qal perfect, first person singular from the root זָמַם (zamam, “plan, plan evil”). Some emend the form to a suffixed form of the noun, זִמָּתִי (zimmatiy, “my plan/evil plan”), and take it as the object of the preceding verb “find.” However, the suffix seems odd, since the psalmist is denying that he has any wrong thoughts. If one takes the form with what precedes, it might make better sense to read זִמּוֹת (zimmot, “evil plans”). However, this emendation leaves an unclear connection with the next line. The present translation maintains the verbal form found in the MT and understands it in a neutral sense, “I have decided” (see Jer 4:28). The words “my mouth will not cross over” (i.e., “transgress, sin”) can then be taken as a noun clause functioning as the object of the verb.

[20:19]  25 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[20:19]  26 tn Or “The scribes” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 5:21.

[20:19]  27 tn Grk “tried to lay hands on him.”

[20:19]  28 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.

[20:20]  29 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[20:20]  30 tn Grk “righteous,” but in this context the point is their false sincerity.

[20:20]  31 tn Grk “so that they might catch him in some word.”

[20:20]  32 tn This word is often translated “authority” in other contexts, but here, in combination with ἀρχή (arch), it refers to the domain or sphere of the governor’s rule (L&N 37.36).
