  Come, let us lift our joyful eyes Up to the courts above, And smile to see our Father there Upon a throne of love. Once ’twas a seat of dreadful wrath, And shot devouring flame; Our God appeared “consuming fire,” And Vengeance was His Name. Rich were the drops of Jesus’ blood That calmed His frowning face, That sprinkled o’er the burning throne, And turned the wrath to grace.   A dread hath come on me, I know not where to flee, My pow’rs can naught avail me; My trembling limbs grow weak, My lips refuse to speak, My heart and senses fail me. For thinking on that sound That once shall pierce the ground And make its slumb’rers tremble, “Arise! the Day of Doom Is come at last—is come! Before the Judge assemble!” Ah God! no tempest’s shock That cleaves the solid rock Could make my spirit shiver As doth that awful tone; Were my heart steel or stone ’Twould hear that voice and quiver. I eat, or wake, or sleep, I talk, or smile, or weep, Yet still that voice of thunder Is sounding through my heart— “Forget not what thou art, The doom thou liest under!” For daily do I see How many deaths there be, How swiftly all things wither; How sickness fills the grave, Or fire, or sword, or wave Is sweeping thousands thither. When weary in the Christian race, Far off appears my resting place, And, fainting, I mistrust Thy grace, Then, Savior, plead for me. • [1Jo 2:4] Who Keepeth Not God’s Word

  Who keepeth not God’s Word, yet saith, “I know the Lord,” is wrong; In him is not that blessèd faith Through which the truth is strong; But he who hears and keeps the Word, Is not of this world, but of God. The faith His Word hath caused to shine Will kindle love in thee; More wouldst thou know of things divine, Deeper thy love must be; True faith not only gives thee light, But strength to love and do the right. Jesus hath washed away our sin, And we are children now; Who feels such hope as this within, To evil cannot bow; Rather with Christ all scorn endure, So we be like our Maker pure! For he doth please the Father well Who simply can obey; In him the love of God doth dwell Who steadfast keeps His way; A daily active life of love, Such fruits a living faith must prove. He is in God, and God in him, Who still abides in love; ’Tis love that makes the cherubim Obey and praise above; For God is love, the loveless heart Hath in His life and joy no part.

  What is the world to me, With all its vaunted pleasure When Thou, and Thou alone, Lord Jesus, art my Treasure! Thou only, dearest Lord, My soul’s Delight shalt be; Thou art my Peace, my Rest— What is the world to me? The world is like a cloud And like a vapor fleeting, A shadow that declines, Swift to its end retreating. My Jesus doth abide, Though all things fade and flee; My everlasting Rock— What is the world to me? The world seeks to be praised And honored by the mighty, Yet never once reflects That they are frail and flighty. But what I truly prize Above all things is He, My Jesus, He alone— What is the world to me? The world seeks after wealth And all that Mammon offers, Yet never is content Though gold should fill it coffers. I have a higher good, Content with it I’ll be: My Jesus is my Wealth— What is the world to me? The world is sorely grieved Whenever it is slighted Or when its hollow fame And honor have been blighted. Christ, Thy reproach I bear Long as it pleaseth Thee; I’m honored by my Lord— What is the world to me? The world with wanton pride Exalts its sinful pleasures And for them foolishly Gives up the heavenly treasures. Let others love the world With all its vanity; I love the Lord, my God— What is the world to me? The world abideth not; Lo, like a flash ’twill vanish; With all it gorgeous pomp Pale death it cannot banish; Its riches pass away, And all its joys must flee; But Jesus doth abide— What is the world to me?   When rising from the bed of death, O’erwhelmed with guilt and fear, I see my Maker face to face, O how shall I appear? If yet, while pardon may be found, And mercy may be sought, My heart with inward horror shrinks, And trembles at the thought; When Thou, O Lord, shalt stand disclosed In majesty severe, And sit in judgment on my soul, O how shall I appear? But Thou hast told the troubled mind Who does her sins lament, The timely tribute of her tears Shall endless woe prevent. Then see the sorrow of my heart, Ere yet it be too late; And hear my Savior’s dying groans, To give those sorrows weight. For never shall my soul despair Her pardon to procure, Who knows Thine only Son has died To make her pardon sure.
