It is highly probable that this Psalm was written by one of the descendants of Korah on the return from the Bablonian captivity. It seems to have been written in praise of Jerusalem; and, typically, of the Christian church.

It is uncertain when this highly finished and beautiful ode was composed; though some think it was written by David in the wilderness when persecuted by Saul.
