  I bow my forehead to the dust, I veil mine eyes for shame, And urge, in trembling self distrust, A prayer without a claim. No offering of mine own I have, Nor works my faith to prove; I can but give the gifts He gave, And plead His love for love. I dimly guess, from blessings known, Of greater out of sight; And, with the chastened psalmist, own His judgments too are right. And if my heart and flesh are weak To bear an untried pain, The bruiséd reed He will not break, But strengthen and sustain. I know not what the future hath Of marvel or surprise, Assured alone that life and death His mercy underlies.   Prostrate, dear Jesus, at Thy feet, A guilty rebel lies; And upwards to Thy mercy seat, Presumes to lift his eyes. If tears of sorrow would suffice To pay the debt I owe, Tears should from both my weeping eyes In ceaseless torrents flow.   God, in the Gospel of His Son, Makes His eternal counsels known; Where love in all its glory shines, And truth is drawn in fairest lines. Here sinners of a humble frame May taste His grace, and learn His Name; May read, in characters of blood, The wisdom, power, and grace of God. The prisoner here may break his chains; The weary rest from all his pains; The captive feel his bondage cease; The mourner find the way of peace. Here faith reveals to mortal eyes A brighter world beyond the skies; Here shines the light which guides our way From earth to realms of endless day.
