  O God the deep immutable, the changeless, wise and still, You’re the absolute, eternal One; You wield the sovereign will. Deep Heav’n itself and even time must bend beneath your sway. With a whispered thought you banish night in a flash of blinding day. The seas are boundaried by your word; great mountains heed your call. Majestic swirls of galaxies adorn your royal hall. The centuries are lumps of clay shaped by your strength and skill. You mold the long millennia to the dictates of your will. The boundless, black-robed skies proclaim your vast, astonishing might: Their flaming jewels rejoice for you in silent shouts of light. With sure and sovereign strokes your hands finger the cosmic strings, And play celestial symphonies as all creation sings. And silent now, the angels stare; stunned seraphs blush, amazed; Great Michael sheaths the sword that at the Gate of Eden blazed. Mighty Gabriel sets his trump aside, and listens to his Lord, As Love incomprehensible enfleshes the Living Word.   In righteous glory reigning, our God sits high enthroned, His right and truth maintaining, His justice making known. He stands above Time’s river, the worlds within His view, His right hand will deliver to every man his due. Before His bar no pleading excuses any flaw; But wickedness exceeding ignites the flames of Law. ’Mid Sinai’s sounding thunder the verdict has been read: All men, in awestruck wonder, fall down before Him, dead. Such wrath, beyond all telling! Can it be turned aside? Is there a strong, safe dwelling where Hell can be denied? Can holy, perfect righteousness forgive and reconcile? Can God, though angered, still bless the wicked and the vile? Yes, yes, my soul has found out! There is a mercy sure! A sovereign grace to sound out—a love both true and pure! The flesh of God is given to meet the Law’s demands, And now I am forgiven, while Christ in Heaven stands! With that propitiation, God and His saints embrace! The glorious sky, embracing all, Is like the Maker’s love, Wherewith encompassed, great and small In peace and order move. • [Psa 8:1] O Lord, Our Heav’nly King

  O Lord, our heav’nly King, Thy Name is all divine; Thy glories round the earth are spread, And o’er the heav’ns they shine. When to Thy works on high I raise my wond’ring eyes, I see the moon, complete in light, Adorn the darksome skies. When I survey the stars, And all their shining forms, Lord, what is man, that worthless thing, Akin to dust and worms? Lord, what is worthless man, That Thou shouldst love him so? Next to Thine angels he is placed, And lord of all below. Thine honors crown his head, While beasts, like slaves, obey; And birds that cut the air with wings, And fish that cleave the sea. How rich Thy bounties are! And wondrous are Thy ways; Of dust and worms Thy power can frame A monument of praise. Out of the mouths of babes And sucklings Thou canst draw Surprising honors to Thy Name And strike the world with awe.   O Lord, our Lord, in all the earth, How excellent Thy Name! Thy glory Thou hast spread afar In all the starry frame. From lips of children, Thou, O Lord, Hast mighty strength ordained, That adversaries should be stilled And vengeful foes restrained. When I regard the wondrous heavens, Thy handiwork on high, The moon and stars ordained by Thee, Oh, what is man! I cry. Oh, what is man, in Thy regard To hold so large a place! And what the son of man, that Thou Dost visit him in grace! For Thou hast made him little less Than Thy blest angels be; With honor Thou hast crowned his head And glorious dignity. On man Thy wisdom hath bestowed A pow’r well nigh divine; With honor Thou hast crowned his head With glory like to Thine. Thou hast subjected all to him, And lord of all is he, Of flocks and herds, and beasts and birds, And all within the sea. Thy mighty works and wondrous grace Thy glory, Lord, proclaim.
