  O God, to know that Thou art just Gives hope and peace within; We could not in a mercy trust Which takes no count of sin. I fain would open to Thy sight My utmost wickedness; Set, Lord, in Thy most searching light What I have done amiss. No stern and needless law was Thine— Hard to be understood— But plainly read in every line, Holy, and just, and good. Though basely weak my fallen race, And masterful my foes, I had th’omnipotence of grace To conquer, if I chose.   A dread hath come on me, I know not where to flee, My pow’rs can naught avail me; My trembling limbs grow weak, My lips refuse to speak, My heart and senses fail me. For thinking on that sound That once shall pierce the ground And make its slumb’rers tremble, “Arise! the Day of Doom Is come at last—is come! Before the Judge assemble!” Ah God! no tempest’s shock That cleaves the solid rock Could make my spirit shiver As doth that awful tone; Were my heart steel or stone ’Twould hear that voice and quiver.   Who keepeth not God’s Word, yet saith, “I know the Lord,” is wrong; In him is not that blessèd faith Through which the truth is strong; But he who hears and keeps the Word, Is not of this world, but of God. The faith His Word hath caused to shine Will kindle love in thee; More wouldst thou know of things divine, Deeper thy love must be; True faith not only gives thee light, But strength to love and do the right. Jesus hath washed away our sin, And we are children now; Who feels such hope as this within, To evil cannot bow; Rather with Christ all scorn endure, So we be like our Maker pure! For he doth please the Father well Who simply can obey; In him the love of God doth dwell Who steadfast keeps His way; A daily active life of love, Such fruits a living faith must prove.   The morning light is breaking, the darkness disappears; The sons of earth are waking, to penitential tears; Each breeze that sweeps the ocean brings tidings from afar Of nations in commotion, prepared for Zion’s war. Rich dews of grace come o’er us, in many a gentle shower, And brighter scenes before us, are opening every hour; Each cry to heaven going, abundant answers brings, And heavenly winds are blowing, with peace upon their wings. See heathen nations bending before the God we love, And thousand hearts ascending in gratitude above: While sinners, now confessing, the Gospel call obey, And seek the Savior’s blessing, a nation in a day. Blest river of salvation, pursue thy onward way; Flow thou to every nation, nor in thy riches stay: Stay not till all the lowly triumphant reach their home; Stay not till all the holy proclaim, “The Lord is come.”

  O Christ, our true and only Light, Illumine those who sit in night; Let those afar now hear Thy voice, And in Thy fold with us rejoice. Fill with the radiance of Thy grace The souls now lost in error’s maze, And all, O Lord, whose secret minds, Some dark delusion hurts and blinds. And all who else have strayed from Thee, O gently seek; Thy healing be To every wounded conscience given; And let them also share Thy heaven.
